The current lighting columns

Waaree Energies Ltd, a diversified and fast growing solar power solutions company bagged a turnkey order to design, engineer, supply, install and commission solar photovoltaic power plants. This order includes the installation of LED Lighting Fixtures in 126 number of jails aggregating to 305 KWP, in Madhya Pradesh. An emergency light is a battery-backed lighting device that comes on automatically when a building experiences a power outage. The installation process is near completion.

The turnkey order was obtained from Madhya Pradesh Urja Vikas Nigam Limited, a M.P Govt. Undertaking. Hitesh Doshi, CMD, Waaree Group said, "Today being energy efficient is no more a matter of choice, but a matter of indispensability. This initiative is in line with our commitment towards building a greener and safer future."

The solar powered LED light fixtures will contribute significantly in terms of overhauling the existing infrastructures within the jails and will also ensure better security standards.

Waaree Energies is continually exploring new opportunities in the eco-friendly space. With a vision to provide the society with a cleaner and greener tomorrow, Waaree began its foray into the renewable energy market, in 2007.

Founded in 1989, Waaree successfully developed cutting edge technologies to become one of the most preferred brands in the field of instrumentation. The company major business lines are solar energy, industrial valves, petroleum equipment and process control instrumentation. Over the years, Waaree has rapidly expanded, combining organic growth with selective acquisition policies. The primary objective is to create presences both commercial and technologically advanced in areas of industrial development in the world. Waaree has a presence in over 68 countries.

Adding more lighting to an area has been proven to deter crimes. In a 2001 Cambridge University experiment, crime rates decreased by 41 percent in areas where street lighting was improved. The savings caused by reduced crimes rates actually outweighed the financial costs of adding street lights. Adding more lighting on campus might mean a chunk of money upfront, but this could be easily covered by the reduced crime rate on campus.Thank you for providing us with information to help us maintain street light.

Along with safety, a growing trend at K-State is our concern with the environment and energy costs. These ideals can be seen taking shape in recycling bins popping up around campus and in more complex projects like the Leadership Study Building’s LEED certification. Adding additional lighting around campus provides another opportunity for us to “go green” by changing out some of the old lights and installing the new fluorescent or LED light bulbs.

In June 2013 the Buckinghamshire County Council Business Investment Group (BIG) approved a three year LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting replacement strategy. Over the next 3 years almost 7,500 street lights will be replaced.

LED lighting provides on average 50-60% reduction to annual energy consumption when compared to traditional lighting and has an extended life of 20 years as opposed to the standard 3 to 6 years for a traditional lamp, therefore reducing maintenance costs greatly.

The current lighting columns will remain in situ and the project focuses solely on changing the lantern in order to provide best value. The LED lighting itself provides a clearer,A solar bulb that charges up during the day and lights the night when the sun sets. brighter white light as opposed to the traditional yellow glow of current street lights.

Replacements will commence in Autumn 2013. 1,100 street lights will be replaced by the end of December 2013 with a further 1,550 across the county by the end of March 2014.

The programme to replace street lights in residential areas across the county is subject to future funding but is in progress, with a view to achieving 90% LED across the county within a five-year period.

About SolarWorld

Solar panels from SolarWorld, the largest U.S. solar manufacturer for more than 35 years, now power the largest solar-electric installation in the Caribbean nation of Dominican Republic. The 1.5-megawatt solar array sits near the runway of Cibao International Airport, the country’s third largest airport.Xenon HID Worlds make hid lighting affordable to everyone and for all your vehicle needs. The system, a complete solar solution featuring SolarWorld’s high-quality solar panels and proprietary racking, generates enough clean energy to support about half of the airport’s energy needs.

In late July, Dominican Republic President Danilo Medina and Felix Garcia, the president of the airport’s Board of Directors, presided over the plant’s commissioning. In a statement released July 23, Enrique Ramirez, president of the national commission of energy, called the solar project one of the largest and most ambitious in Latin America.

“As a company with business ties to Latin America dating back more than 30 years, SolarWorld has long understood that solar power is an essential part of the region’s energy mix,” said Kevin Kilkelly, president of SolarWorld Americas. “For island nations like Dominican Republic, solar offers a clean and cost-effective solution to dependence on expensive imported oil for power generation.”

The project was developed and installed by Dominican-based Trace Solar SRL within the framework of the country’s renewable energy laws, which use tax incentives and net metering to encourage solar deployment. Trace collaborated with SolarWorld’s engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) division to design the system, which is composed of 5,880 SolarWorld Sunmodule solar panels mounted atop the company’s Sunfix Ground Mount racking.Thank you for providing us with information to help us maintain street light. The array is expected to generate 193,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity every month. According to government estimates, this rate translates to a monthly savings of about 1,We offer solar photovoltaic system and commercial incentives to encourage our customers to install solar energy systems.240 barrels of oil.

So what’s not to like?

The grandest Jeep competes in one of the industry’s most brutal segments. Unlike the Wrangler, which has no legitimate competition, the Grand Cherokee has to lure buyers away from Mercedes, Rover, Lexus, and other latte-serving dealerships. A legendary SUV pedigree alone isn’t always enough to hook upscale SUV buyers.

We’ll leave the discussions about sumptuous amenities to the whine-and-cheese magazines. (“No whiners” is our motto.) Instead, we’re obsessed with the vehicle’s mechanicals, particularly its powertrain technology.

For 2014, the Grand Cherokee remains on the shared-with-Durango WK2 platform. But the big news is the highly refined 50-state-legal diesel. The Fiat-influenced 3.0L EcoDiesel V-6 from VM Motori (a joint Fiat/GM holding) has the same displacement as the former optional Mercedes-supplied BlueTec mill. The EcoTech has the edge in power over its predecessor: 220 hp versus 210, 420 lb-ft of torque compared to 400.

For a diesel to appeal to discerning SUV buyers, the oil-burner needs a metaphorical sport jacket over its biceps. Inherent compression-ignition rattle and clatter are minimized in the EcoDiesel by a 60-degree cylinder-bank configuration. Furthermore, the engine’s straight-across firing order produces smooth enough rotating-assembly action that a balance shaft isn’t needed. The engine block itself is made from compacted graphite iron, which has better strength-to-weight properties and corrosion resistance than traditional “gray” cast iron.

Efficient fuel burn contributes to the eco part of the diesel’s name. The common-rail injection system feeds the fuel at 29,000 psi for improved diesel-droplet atomization. Air is pumped in by a variable-geometry turbocharger through swirl-control intake ports.

Advanced thermal dissipation contributes to the EcoDiesel’s 50-state compliance. The turbocharger and EGR are water-cooled; an intercooler also helps shed heat and drop the air charge temp. Inside the cylinders, oil jets cool the pistons. For emissions control the EcoDiesel uses a particulate filter and urea-injection Selective Catalyst Reduction to reduce nitrogen oxide.

The V-6 EcoDiesel outperforms comparable gasoline V-8s in vital areas.Xenon HID Worlds make hid lighting affordable to everyone and for all your vehicle needs. Granted, top-end horsepower is often less: 220 hp in the EcoDiesel versus 360 in the Grand’s 5.7L Hemi or even 470 in the 6.4L Grand SRT street-sweeper. Torque is a different story, as the EcoDiesel makes all of its 420 lb-ft near idle; the 5.7L Hemi manages 390 lb-ft at 4,250 rpm,They are called "solar" panels or solar module because most of the time, the most powerful source of light available is the Sun. and the SRT tops out at 460 lb-ft in that same range. Towing capacity is the same for the EcoDiesel and Hemi: 7,200 pounds for 4x4 models, 7,400 for two-bys.

Fuel economy is no contest. Jeep hypes the EcoDiesel’s mileage as best-in-class at 22/30 mpg (4x2) and 21/28 (4x4). In comparison, the 5.7L ’14 Grand Cherokee is EPA-rated at 14/22 (4x2) and 14/20 (4x4). That equals an estimated 43 percent fuel economy advantage over V-8–powered SUVs in the segment. The EcoDiesel’s cruising range is ballparked at 730 miles.Choose your favorite street lamp paintings from thousands of available designs. The carryover 3.6L Pentastar V-6, shared with the JK, is also offered for 2014.

One other powertrain innovation debuts for 2014: Eight-speed automatic transmissions are now standard. Gas engines get the 845RE, while the EcoDiesel is paired to a stouter ZF gearbox. The additional gears mean closer ratios to make shifting less perceptible. Gearing also factors into the EcoDiesel’s impressive fuel economy, keeping revs as low as feasible for as much time as possible. The ZF’s lower First gear also numerically raises the crawl ratio for 2014 to 44.1:1 (4.7 First gear multiplied by 2.72 transfer case multiplied by 3.45 axles). (The previous model’s 65RFE six-speed had a 3.0:1 First gear.)

These improvements make the Grand feel increasingly more like a luxury vehicle than a rough and rugged Jeep we’re accustom to. Nearly no new-Grand buyers will actually go off-road recreationally, so pavement handling and overall fit and finish are the engineering attention-grabbers. Any adventurous owners will appreciate all the preexisting chassis technology that gives 4x4 WK2 Grands their Trail Rated badges. This includes Quadra-Lift adjustable air suspension and Selec-Terrain mode, which does almost everything but steer for the driver off-road.

Also, the EcoDiesel’s torque is apparent upon acceleration, but the diesel engine is barely louder than the Hemi from inside the cockpit. Jeep, Fiat, and VM engineers apparently worked long and late extinguishing or absorbing all truckish traits (other than torque and fuel economy) for the ’14 EcoDiesel Grand Cherokee.

So what’s not to like? The price of entry appears to be the only drawback. Upgrading to the EcoDiesel adds $4,500 to the Limited’s MSRP. (The diesel isn’t available in base Laredo models.) Furthermore, the EcoDiesel option is bundled with the Limited’s $3,000 Luxury Group II package (HID headlights, panorama sunroof, GPS, ventilated leather upholstery, and more), making the “base” EcoDiesel Grand’s MSRP $46,290. Add in the various off-road option packages or step up to the Overland or Summit trim levels and the ’14 diesel prices out around 50 grand. Believe it or not, that’s actually reasonable in the luxe-ute class. However, it raises the question, will the Wrangler someday get a $4,500 optional diesel under the hood?

Double Mastectomy Leads To 'Calamity Of Errors,' Review

Lynn Burkitt asked for a double mastectomy, hoping to rid herself of worry after a scary bout with breast cancer. But what the 52-year-old from Medicine Hat, Alta., got instead was a series of surgeries and mishaps that left her with a gaping, infected abscess in her chest. Two rolls of packing gauze were left rotting inside her, undetected by home care staff.

"You could've put your fist inside my chest," Burkitt said of the initial abscess. "They have made such a mess of my chest that I look like a freak."The open wound is now the size of a poker chip,We offer solar photovoltaic system and commercial incentives to encourage our customers to install solar energy systems. slowly healing but still debilitating the Alberta woman."If I had known what was going to happen, I would never have done" the double mastectomy, she says now.Burkitt's case caused Alberta Health Services to review procedures at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital and institute new rules for communicating more clearly with home care.

It has also shed a new light on the burgeoning world of home care services. A recent study published last month by in the BMJ Quality & Safety journal estimated that one in every 10 patients in home care experiences an adverse event and that more than half of these events are preventable.

The number of patients recovering in their own homes instead of hospitals is exponentially rising as hospitals try to reduce overcrowding and expensive lengthy hospital stays. Last year, an estimated 1.4 million Canadians received home care, a 55 per cent rise from three years earlier.

'Felt like it was on fire'

Burkitt's woes began in 2010 when she underwent radiation therapy on her right breast following a diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a common type of non-invasive cancer.Less than two years later, in January 2012, her right breast became swollen and hot to the touch. Doctor after doctor examined it and suggested a myriad of possible causes from shingles to a return of cancer.

When Burkitt had a mammogram, there was no sign of cancer but still the pain persisted. With a strong family history of cancer, she said the fear weighed heavily on her."I just said, 'You know what, give me a double mastectomy because this way I don't ever have to worry about cancer coming back'."

On June 6, 2012, Burkitt underwent the operation at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. Within days, she felt ill.Burkitt underwent a second surgery to drain an infection. After that, she felt much better and recalls calling her doctor a hero. But in the coming weeks, more troubling issues began."My breast was very red,Shop funtional and elegant solar lights, outdoor solar lighting, solar garden lights, path lights and decorative solar lights. very swollen," she says. "The smell was just horrific. It's hard to even describe. It just smelled rotten."

"It was extremely painful. I could hardly move. I've never felt so terrible in my life. … My whole right side just felt like it was on fire."Home care nurses took care of Burkitt every day, but "it was getting worse and worse," she says.Hospital reviewed patient safety

She made multiple trips to the emergency room and doctors prescribed antibiotics, but it wasn't until she underwent a third surgery that the culprit was found."When I came to, I found out the second surgeon had left two rolls of packing tape inside of me that rotted and they had to pull it all out," said Burkitt. "So I ended up with a big hole in my chest, which has not healed."

While it’s normal procedure for a surgeon to leave packing gauze in an open wound, that packing must be changed on a regular basis.Medical experts suggest that home care nurses should have seen the gauze sticking out of the abscess and replaced it daily as the wound slowly healed from the inside out.

But Burkitt says home care staff didn't see the gauze deep inside the wound because the surgeon stitched the sides of the wound together, obscuring it from view. Also, she says there was no documentation passed along to alert caregivers of the packing gauze.

In a letter dated Jan. 10, 2013,We turn your dark into light courtesy of our brilliant sun, solar street light, solar power generation. Alberta Health Services apologized for Burkitt's experience with the packing gauze and vowed to review its processes to prevent such a situation from happening again.

Burkitt said she asked the hospital months ago to detail what changes had been made, but never heard back.Alberta Health Services told CBC News that it conducted a patient safety review at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital into continuity of care and communication among caregivers."A number of steps have been taken to ensure patient safety in similar circumstances," the written statement said.

'Calamity of errors'

The health authority says that among the changes being made at the hospital is a new "visual alert" on patient charts to alert caregivers to special needs. It is also educating employees on the need to document instructions when patients transfer between parts of the system.

First Solar Sells Canadian Power Plants

It is the first project transaction between First Solar and GE since their solar technology and commercial partnership was announced Aug. 6.

The ABW Partnership, originally announced in 2011, consists of majority owner GE Energy Financial Services and Alterra Power Corporation, which made an equity contribution and will serve as the projects’ managing partner.Shop funtional and elegant solar lights, outdoor solar lighting, solar garden lights, path lights and decorative solar lights. The ABW Partnership raised debt for the acquisition, with The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company serving as agent and lead arranger. The debt syndicate consists of The Great-West Life Assurance Company, Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada and Caisse de dep?t et placement du Quebec.

First Solar has completed construction of the power plants Amherstburg (10MWAC), Belmont (20MWAC) and Walpole (20MWAC) and has commissioned and energized them so they are providing power to the grid. First Solar will provide operations and maintenance services under long-term contracts. Output of the power plants will be sold to Ontario Power Authority under its Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program (RESOP), with 20-year power purchase agreements.

“First Solar is proud to contribute to Ontario’s renewable energy objectives,” said Tim Rebhorn, First Solar’s Senior Vice President of Business Development Americas. “In addition to providing clean electricity, the projects have provided meaningful employment and local economic benefits, as well as contribute to the safe and efficient operation of the local utility system.”

For its part, GE Energy Financial Services said the Ontario projects contribute to its cumulative one-gigawatt, $1.5-billion solar investment portfolio, comprising 50 installations, including several with First Solar in North America and Australia.

“Our Ontario investments deepen our longstanding relationship with First Solar and illustrate our interest in acquiring solar power projects at various stages of development and construction,” said Mark Tonner, managing director and Canada business leader at GE Energy Financial Services. “Through a variety of equity and lease arrangements, we help developers monetize their own investments.”

Combined, the Ontario facilities are expected to produce enough clean, sustainable electricity to power approximately 6,300 local homes and avoid 14,600 tons of carbon dioxide a year the equivalent of taking 3,700 cars off the road.

Earlier this month, First Solar and GE announced that First Solar had acquired GE’s solar technology intellectual property and that the two companies had entered into a collaborative commercial partnership.First Solar’s collection of solar projects in Ontario, Canada, totaling 50 megawatts, were sold to an investment partnership led by GE Energy Financial Services. We offer solar photovoltaic system and commercial incentives to encourage our customers to install solar energy systems.

WINAICO, a subsidiary of Taiwan′s biggest photovoltaic module manufacturer Win Win Precision Technology Co., Ltd., has started production of a 48 cell version of its popular high efficiency QUANTUM series module. The new high performance module with a nominal capacity of up to 220 W has one of the highest outputs among 48 cell modules in serial production. The module has the same dimensions as the standard WINAICO Blackline Poly 48 cell modules (1347x999x40 mm), but with an astounding module efficiency of 16.35 %.

To achieve this efficiency,A solar lantern uses this sunlight that is abundantly available to charge its batteries through a Solar Panel and gives light in nighttime. WINAICO uses a combination of integrated rear side passivation and selective emitter technology (PERC) technology. Thanks to the activation of the solar cell rear side and the passivation of the surface, the module achieves a higher light yield as well as a clearly improved temperature coefficient. For the customers the improved weak-light behavior and the increased efficiency at raised ambient temperature mean an increased specific annual yield.

“This new series offers residential customers a module with one of the highest outputs per square meter that is available on the market. The module was especially developed for the Japanese spaced constrained rooftop market in order to ensure the maximum performance generated for our customers. Our relentless investment in R&D and process optimization has yielded a module with a 10-20 % higher nominal output than the commonly available 48 cell modules. Furthermore the exclusive use of Taiwanese cells and PERC technology results in a module efficiency rate of 16.35 % which is an excellent result for a 48 cell module. Following the introduction and great reception of the 60 cell QUANTUM we are very happy to introduce the 48 cell version. The module once again confirms our position as a quality and technological leader in high efficiency PV module production”, said Sascha Rossmann, Vice President of Global Sales.

Alivisatos appointed Samsung Distinguished Chair

Chemist Paul Alivisatos, one of the pioneers of nanoscience, has been appointed to the Samsung Distinguished Chair in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at UC Berkeley in recognition of his many scientific achievements.

The endowed chair, established through the support of Samsung Electronics Co.,We have a great selection of blown glass backyard solar landscape lights and solar garden light. will help cement the campus’s leadership in research and innovation in an area that has great implications for many fields ranging from biology to energy, the Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Research announced Thursday (Aug. 22). Alivisatos, director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and a UC Berkeley professor of chemistry, is known for his research into quantum dot semiconductor nanocrystals, clusters of hundreds to thousands of atoms with novel properties that can be applied to electronic devices and solar cells as well as light-emitting diodes (LEDs).

Dr. Youngjoon Gil, executive vice president of the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, welcomed the appointment.

“Historically, the invention of a new material can initiate a quantum leap in the development of industry,” said Dr. Gil. “Nanomaterials offer such opportunities for the electronics as well as the biosciences industry, where precise control and manipulation of energy is required. Quantum dot, pioneered by Professor Alivisatos, has established its commercial value by reproducing more realistic colors on displays. Through the establishment of the endowed chair, Samsung anticipates a closer partnership with UC Berkeley, the world’s leader in nanoscience, in exploring the commercial value of nanotechnology.”

Over the past two decades, UC Berkeley has become a brain trust in nanoscience and nanotechnology, with nearly a hundred nanoscience and nanotech researchers in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics and materials science. These researchers have made major advances in understanding the nano-scale molecular motors that move materials around inside cells or manipulate DNA; creating tiny motors,Soli-lite provides the world with high-performance solar roadway and solar street lighting solutions. How does a solar charger work and where would you use a solar charger? lasers and photonic devices for smaller electronic circuits; creating flexible and inexpensive solar cells from nanorods; and understanding the properties of new materials such as graphene and high-temperature superconductors.

Graham Fleming, UC Berkeley’s vice chancellor for research, lauded Samsung for its initiative in establishing this chair.

“The new chair helps build on our strengths in the conversation and utilization of energy on the nano scale,” said Fleming. “It is a fitting recognition of Paul’s achievements and his world-wide influence on the field of nanoscience. We look forward to continue expanding our relationship with Samsung in this area.”

Alivisatos is widely recognized for his contributions to the study of nanocrystals, ranging from control of their synthesis and fabrication to studies of their optical, electrical, structural, and thermodynamic properties. He demonstrated that semiconductor nanocrystals can be grown into rods as opposed to spheres. This achievement paved the way for a slew of new synthetic advances, developing methods for controlling the shape, connectivity and topology of nanocrystals.

Nanocrystals are typically a few nanometers in diameter — larger than molecules but smaller than bulk solids — and frequently exhibit physical and chemical properties somewhere in between. Given that a nanocrystal is virtually all surface and no interior, its properties can vary considerably as the crystal grows.

Alivisatos’s research has opened the door to a number of potential new applications for nanocrystals. These include their use as fluorescent probes for the study of biological materials and LEDs, and the fabrication of hybrid solar cells that combine nanotechnology with plastic electronics. Plans for Sydney's light rail lines
Real estate agents are seizing the likelihood that suburbs along the mooted light rail lines in Sydney will benefit the surrounding housing market.

Randwick, which would be connected to the city via the south east light rail, has experienced added value from investors as as a result of the mooted tram link, said agent Theo Karangis from NG Farah Coogee.

“I could already see now a big of movement upwards, we’re achieving some really good results.Soli-lite provides the world with high-performance solar roadway and solar street lighting solutions. We’ve sold over 40 apartments this year alone and our open for inspections has definitely increased,” he said.

Some $423 million from the state budget has been set aside to allocated over four years to the 12km light rail connecting Circular, Central and George Street to the entertainment precincts of Randwick Racecourse, Moore Park’s sports grounds, and hubs University of NSW and Prince of Wales Hospital. How does a solar charger work and where would you use a solar charger?

The Randwick area, which has a significant student population who attend nearby universities, is currently serviced by buses and can experience traffic congestion to Sydney’s CBD during peak times.

Recently, more families of tertiary students have been buying into the area for their children to live in while they study at nearby universities and then using the property as an investment when their children graduate.

These investors could capitalise on the growing house prices, said Karangis.

“We’re achieving the higher end prices in Randwick. Before that,A solar bulb that charges up during the day and lights the night when the sun sets. those prices were just in Coogee,” he said.

The light rail could also bring in a new lifestyle to the suburbs they service.

Dulwich Hill, whose 5.6km extension to the inner west light rail extension is currently under construction, has seen urban gentrification with more retail opportunities and stores like Gleebooks and gourmet deli The Larder joining the suburb.

The new transport has quickened the pace of the lifestyle change, offering the cafe lifestyle to a more affordable part of the inner west, said agent Adrian Abrook from LJ Hooker Dulwich Hill.

“This just gives us another opportunity to get other buyers who may be looking at this market to explore it,” he said.

Dulwich Hill will be one of nine stops on the extension planned to open next year. Nine new stops will be added to the current services. $76 million over four years was allocated to the inner west line from the state budget.

However, some residents in Surry Hills lobbying against the proposed route of the South East Light Rail are concerned the tram link will have a negative impact on their properties.

The transport construction and long term effects of the light rail will impact on surrounding retail as well as the liveability of the suburb, said Venietta Slama-Powell, founder and convenor of community lobby group PUSH (People Unite Surry Hills).

“Properties directly on the route are at risk of being severely financially affected. Considerations to increase in noise,We have a great selection of blown glass backyard solar landscape lights and solar garden light. visual outlook, traffic congestion, safety, property access and importantly parking. We have been advised that loss of parking can reduce a property by 20%,” she said.

The light rail route is planned for Surry Hill’s Devonshire Street via Chalmers Street to reach the city centre.

The community group would like to work with the state government to ensure the tram line doesn’t impact upon residents and existing retails.

“PUSH and many community members support the concept of light rail, a Surry Hills route and stops. But our team and Engineering Panel believe the initial Government proposal can be greatly improved by the application of local input, as happened with the Eastern Distributor, and a solution that is more likely to have a positive impact on most, if not all property prices,” she said. The world's largest independent online retailer for solar lighting, street lights & outdoor lighting fixtures.

Poring over some new uses

During the Civil War, Hostetter's Stomach Bitters was sold to Union soldiers heading south to the battlefields. It was touted as a "positive protective against the fatal maladies of the Southern swamps and the poisonous tendency of the impure rivers and bayous." The stuff was shipped west, too, where miners suffered their own spates of dysentery.

In Tonopah, Nev.Thank you for providing us with information to help us maintain street light., William Peck discovered that Hostetter's relieved his aches and pains, too. Evidently, he consumed about 10,000 bottles at the turn of the last century. It's no wonder, because, when analyzed, Hostetter's was 90 percent alcohol and 10 percent opium. We believe he consumed this much because he built an entire house out of Hostetter's bottles and concrete.

Building with bottles originated in the deserts, where so many mining towns rose up amid Spartan ecosystems. Miners' tents were soon in tatters and they had to find a new building material because shipping lumber by mule train was quite expensive. Those who had not yet struck it rich were left out in the cold. Literally.

Mining towns, however, had one thing in abundance, as you might imagine: bottles. Bars did a roaring business -- and so did the peddlers offering patent medicines. Bottles accumulated all over the place, so it was just a matter of time before they were pressed into service as building materials.

Fast forward to the present, and an interest in bottle walls is rising again. Rather than being lugged to the recycling center, bottles can be reused in the garden. Think layering bottles, just like bricks,The world's largest independent online retailer for solar lighting, street lights & outdoor lighting fixtures. onto wet mortar.

A few things to consider if you want to work with bottles.

First, leave the labels on because they'll be hidden by the mortar.

Second, collect bottles that are all roughly the same size. This is really helpful for newbies who are still learning this art. Similar-sized bottles stack cleanly and hold together better than do bottles of various sizes.

Third, use bottles of the same shape. The square shape of Hostetter's bottles made them easy to stack without rolling. Rounded bottles mixed with square ones will be more challenging.

Fourth, consider using bottles of the same color. Consider using all blue bottles or all green ones -- or just amber beer bottles -- for a powerful design statement.

While bottles were commonly used in Nevada for houses, walls might be a better option today. The shorter the wall, the more stable it remains.

A great starter project is creating a bench out of bottles using wood or a stone slab on top for a comfortable seat.

Consider how light shines through such walls in the morning and at sunset when the sun is low. Your wall,The world’s most efficient and cost effective hid lights? accordingly, could lighten up on cue for cocktail hour. Another option is to arrange your landscape lighting to illuminate the back of the bench or wall so the bottles glow all night long.

The best place to learn how to build stuff with recycled bottles is on YouTube. How-to videos there will help you get started. Consider a bottle wall for part of your greenhouse or solarium. Many folks fill their bottles with water and seal them before stacking into a wall for a low-cost thermal mass to keep a solar greenhouse warmer.

Reusing bottles in masonry is one of the most beautiful ways to avoid trips to the recycling center and limit expenditures at the home-improvement store.

Plein air painters offer varied interpretations

The Sunday morning scene could hardly have been more idyllic: farmstead with red barn and white house, fenced pastures of tawny late-summer turf stretching away toward groves of dark-green trees in the distance, placid alpacas grazing in the foreground and at least a half-dozen people scattered around the landscape, sitting or standing at their easels as they painted what they saw.

It’s called “plein air painting,” going out into nature to capture the changing mood of the landscape as clouds come and go and the light changes as the sun travels overhead, with every person who commits oil or acrylic or gouache to canvas interpreting the view in a different way.

Victoria Biedron, coordinator of the Plein Air Painters of Lane County, has been hooked on the practice since moving to the Eugene area about 15 years ago.

“I have to be out here three to six times a week doing this,” Biedron said. “It’s part of my life, a huge part. If it’s not raining sideways or freezing, I’m out painting somewhere, from the wetlands to the ocean to the mountains.”

On Wednesday, Biedron and other plein air practitioners will be out in force, participating in a “paint out” — complete with cash and other prizes — sponsored by the city of Eugene as part of a monthlong “Create! Eugene” effort to get residents involved in artistic activities.

While Biedron plans to devote her time to offering a demonstration of plein air painting in the downtown park blocks at East Eighth Avenue and Oak Street, others will fan out to create their own artworks to enter in the contest at the end of the day.

In addition to bragging rights and prizes, the winners’ work will be displayed at the DIVA Gallery downtown through the end of the month.

In addition, an exhibit of the Lane County group’s previous work already is on the walls at the Jazz Station, also in downtown Eugene, through the beginning of September.

Many painters choose the plein air style instead of painting from photographs or notebooks of previous sketches “because it is so immediate,” Biedron said.

“You can tell the difference right away — it has a freshness and movement and light,” she said. “You can tell that the artist is not laboring over the painting to make it perfect. It has a feeling of being in the moment.”

Even so, many plein air painters take sketchbooks with them or do an initial sketch on the canvas as a guide, “because that helps you work out the details you want to put in and those you want to leave out,” she said.

Her own canvas this morning focused on a single tree near the farmhouse at the Aragon Alpacas farm off Dillard Road southeast of Eugene, while Sally Schwader and Barbara Weinstein, other members of the group, chose to paint a more long-distance landscape.Xenon HID Worlds make hid lighting affordable to everyone and for all your vehicle needs. The High Street Streetscape Project is continuing to make progress with the start of the WVU semester. There are a few things that still need to be done, but the end of the road work is coming.

Contractor Anthony Merante, of A. Merante Contracting, Inc, reported to stakeholders and businesses on a meeting on Thursday, Aug. 15, that the sidewalks are mostly complete on the east, or left, side of High Street. Pedestrians can now enter those businesses without using temporary crosswalks.

There are still a few detours planned and Kirk Street is closed right now.

On Monday, Aug.We have a great selection of blown glass backyard solar landscape lights and solar garden light. 19, crews will close the east side of Kirk Street, between Hastings Funeral Home & Mark IV Printing & Office Supply, for a couple of days. Crews will do this to place a red stamped brick crosswalk. It will be covered with a protective plate and reopened.

If weather permits construction, on Thursday,A solar lantern uses this sunlight that is abundantly available to charge its batteries through a Solar Panel and gives light in nighttime. Aug. 22, Foundry Street will be closed to install a stamped brick crosswalk after Kirk and High Streets have been reopened. CHP seeks fatal hit-run driver

The California Highway Patrol on Sunday asked for the public's help in finding a truck connected with a collision Saturday night in East San Jose that claimed the life of a pedestrian.

CHP spokesman Christopher Falkowski said the victim, whose identity is still being withheld pending a coroner's report, was struck and killed about 8:45 p.m. after a Ford pickup truck hit him near Alum Rock and Harriet avenues. That area, just several blocks from James Lick High School, is poorly lit and does not have any crosswalks. Falkowski said investigators were trying to determine if the victim was in the street or not when the truck hit him.

Multiple witnesses told police they saw the pickup fleeing north on nearby Pickford Avenue and then eastbound on Hyland Avenue. They described it as a late-model, full-sized Ford with oversized tires, light in color and possibly with a red stripe down the hood and front-end damage, said Falkowski. Witnesses did not see the vehicle's license-plate number.

"The witnesses could not provide a good description of the driver," he said, "because everyone who saw it, saw it after the tires were screeching and the truck was already leaving the scene.''

Cindia Iampietro, who lives two doors down from Alum Rock on Hariett Avenue, said that while she did not hear the sound of tires she did hear a loud thud while she was standing in her kitchen.

"There was a party across the street, and I thought someone had backed into my garbage can out front," she said Sunday morning, stopping by the scene of the accident where Alum Rock Avenue still bore the white-ash scars of police flares left the night before on the pavement. "I could see the man laying in the middle of the street, and he wasn't moving. I think it was a neighborhood guy who we see walking around here every day. And I saw what looked like his backpack" about 100 feet down Alum Rock.

Iampietro said neighbors often hear screeching tires on Alum Rock, a wide stretch of road with one lane in either direction and a turning lane in the middle. The 40-mile-per-hour stretch, which is also the route for Bus No. 45, can get extremely busy,A solar lantern uses this sunlight that is abundantly available to charge its batteries through a Solar Panel and gives light in nighttime. she said. One side of the road has a wide dirt path instead of a sidewalk. Stop signs and crosswalks are rare, as are streetlights. The closest working street lamp is several blocks away.

From a floating coop on a houseboat to hen houses with flower boxes, basic rectangular boxes to towering chicken condos, salvaged materials or fresh lumber — coops in Juneau run the gamut. Many chickens are living large, but no matter the size of the coop, Juneau’s chickens seem to be living well.

Predominantly egg-layers, Juneau’s chickens require a few key luxuries in their coops, including a nesting area or laying box, as well as the universally appreciated roosts in their cozy or castle-like coops.

It seems chicken-keeping is on the rise in Juneau in recent years and months, with some families still patiently waiting for the first egg.

“We’re hoping to get some eggs, they haven’t started laying yet, it usually takes about four to six months,” Kevin Maier said of the few hens he and his family keep in the flats.

Erin Hanson and Andrew Heist just got their first egg.Xenon HID Worlds make hid lighting affordable to everyone and for all your vehicle needs. To encourage laying, Erin said they placed golf balls in the nesting boxes — fake eggs are common for this practice as well.

Once they’re going, many breeds of chicken are regular layers.

“We have five birds and we get four or five eggs a day,” Bret Connell said of the brood he and Jorden Nigro keep, though Nigro added it will slow down soon when the chickens molt.

Laying slows in the winter chicken-keepers have said, and while molting. And eventually,We have a great selection of blown glass backyard solar landscape lights and solar garden light. with age, they stop laying entirely.

Hannah and Bryan Hoshide have a couple non-layers they’ve kept around, since many in Juneau view their chickens as productive pets.

“We have a couple girls, one that aged out, she’s two. Then there’s one that never laid, she’s our charity case, because she’s blind and deaf and we just don’t have the heart to kill her.”

Others are more utilitarian about their flocks and have had some chicken dinners. When April Hotchkiss discovered she had acquired a couple roosters — when they started crowing — and she couldn’t get rid of them by other means, fried chicken made the menu, she said.

“We just had to put an end to their life on Saturday,” Hotchkiss said, though she couldn’t quite get up the nerve herself. “I finally found a hunter riding his bicycle down the street and I was like, ‘Can you help for a second here?’ I was able to get everything else done, I just couldn’t kill them.”

Alicia Gillis recently introduced to her flock a breed called Golden Nugget, a few of which went to Hanson and Heist after they built their coop. Gillis called this a dual-purpose breed, meaty and productive layers. They are apparently also cold-hardy, which is a good quality in a chicken destined to live its life in Alaska.

Keeping the chickens warm is another dictator of how the coops look, with many insulated against the weather and others featuring lamps for both light and heat through the winter. Nigro and Connell have a thermostat set up in their insulated coop to turn the heat lamp on when it gets too cold.

To protect chickens from the elements, some coops in Juneau are raised, allowing the chickens a place to peck and scratch outdoors without being doused in rain. Some coops have a roof extending over the chicken run, a precaution as much to keep the run from becoming a mud slick as to keep the chickens dry, Maier said.

Maier and his wife, Shayna Rohwer, built their coop of almost entirely salvaged materials, with the exception of the plastic roof over the run and some the metal corner pieces. The paint they used was, of course, left over from painting their own house, so they have a color-coordinated coop.Connell and Nigro’s coop is painted to match their Sixth Street home and even has a flower box beneath the window.

Now in its fourth season

Now in its fourth season, T.I. And Tiny: The Family Hustle has ushered in a new prototype for the Black family. On the VH1 reality series, rapper Clifford “T.I.” Harris is hip-hop’s leading patriarch, as he, along with his wife, Tiny (formerly of Xscape), works to keep his children grounded and his family unit strong.

Imparting the wisdom he’s gained through his various trials and tribulations, T.I. is extremely hands-on with what goes on under the Harris roof, from teaching the kids how to pull their own weight with house chores to giving them pointers on dating. Of course, the rapper sometimes goes overboard, like on last week’s season premiere when he brought the entire family along for his son Messiah’s first date at Medieval Times. While there, T.I. tries to give his son some advice on wooing the ladies, but ends up making things rather awkward for the bashful 15-year-old when he signals for him to put his arm around his date.

Last season, T.I. raided his stepdaughter Zonnique’s (member of girl group OMG Girlz) music video and photoshoot to oversee her outfit choices, which he considered to be too risqué and not age-appropriate. “As a father, my obligation and responsibility is keep my sons out of jail and my daughters out the strip club, and that’s what I’m gonna do,” he said. Though his intentions tend to be good, T.I.’s often hilarious antics make for truly embarrassing situations for his youngsters. Coincidentally, those same antics have led the show to becoming a home run with family audiences.

While the hip-hop world knows Tip as the King Of The South, on The Family Hustle, he’s the King of family-friendly fun, and embraces his role as an average, overbearing father who brings a new spin on parenthood. In many ways, T.I. And Tiny has become the modern, hip-hop version of The Cosby Show. While the hip-hop couple is no Heathcliff and Claire Huxtable,We installed flexible LED Strip lighting in our kitchen for under cabinet and within cabinet lighting. their family adventures are equally light-hearted and comical, providing a positive reflection of today’s Black family. And just like the Huxtables, T.I. and Tiny’s love is apparent,How solar panel cells work and where to buy solar kits for home use. and it’s passed down along their blended clan (both have children from previous relationships).

That success soon resulted in unwelcome artistic suggestions. "The record label was like, 'You should do this pop song,' and I was like, 'But that's not what we started with,'" Juicy J says. (Naima Cochrane, Juicy's product manager at Columbia, says she doesn't believe there were creative differences between the group and the label, and says that "Juicy and Paul had different visions at the time.") Three 6 Mafia released one more album, 2008's "Last 2 Walk," which included the hit "Lolli Lolli (Pop That Body)" and has sold 335,000 copies. The duo's follow-up material was left in limbo, and Juicy J, who had moved to Los Angeles after the Oscar win, returned to Memphis alone to repeat the DIY formula that had worked for Three 6 Mafia in the mid-'90s.

"I was just doing songs with people from my hood," says Juicy J, who issued nearly a dozen independent releases between April 2009 and May 2012. "I had a street team passing out mixtapes, and sometimes I would get out there and pass out a couple mixtapes myself, just to get the feeling back.A solar lamp is a portable light fixture composed of an LED lamp, a photovoltaic solar panel, and a rechargeable battery."

He also stayed active on Twitter, which is where he met Khalifa before the 25-year-old Pittsburgh rapper's "Black & Yellow" breakthrough in 2011. "I was working on a mixtape, and I was like, 'I want to get you on some records.' He was like, 'Man, I grew up on all your music,'" Juicy J recalls. Two weeks later, the pair met up and became fast friends in Los Angeles, and Khalifa brought in the veteran rapper as a part owner, A&R rep and artist on Taylor Gang in order to have "an OG in the game" help out with the rising indie label.

I'd been there for about two weeks

My last committed attempt to observe the Perseid meteor shower, which star-gazers across the world are enjoying, was back in 2010. I was house-sitting in Spain at the time; my uncle in law used to live on the edge of a tiny village in the Spanish mountains. The village is several hundred metres above sea level, with hardly any street lighting and the most incredibly dark and clear skies – the kind you don't get in the UK outside of a national park.

I'd been there for about two weeks, and every day and night had been completely cloudless, with not even a hint of moisture in the air. Then, on the evening the Perseids were due to peak, everything changed. At dusk, a dense blanket of cloud started to roll across the mountains with a solemn inevitability. By 9pm, I might as well have been staring at a blank cinema screen. I think I manage to see one meteor before the last chink of starlight was extinguished.

The moral, of course, is that astronomy is a cruel and capricious mistress – something star-gazers have known for a very long time. Yet we keep going back. There's something very compelling about staring at the night sky. I'd say that it's innate to us. For most of human history, there can't have been a great deal to do at night. It's no great surprise that our ancestors spent a lot of time looking to the heavens, finding patterns and charting the movement of the planets.

They also weaved their stories into the night sky. As annual reports on the Perseids often fail to explain, the name of this meteor shower is derived from the constellation of Perseus, which is the point in the sky from which the meteors appear to come. Perseus, as you may know, was the slayer of the Gorgon Medusa and rescuer of Andromeda (whose constellation is home to our most famous galactic neighbour). Are you still hesitating about where to buy hid kits? The ancient Greeks saw the great myths of their civilisation written in the stars.

Today, I think we can all agree that we're infinitely smarter than the ancient Greeks. Most 10 year-olds understand that stars are just large nuclear furnaces converting hydrogen into helium, and that the patterns of the constellations are nothing more than tricks of our Earthbound perspective.

Yet our sense of wonder remains curiously undiminished. There's still something almost primordial in the pleasure we can derive from the simple act of looking up at the universe. And arguably, although our understanding of what's going on up there has been transformed, one aspect of our pleasure is not dissimilar from that of our ancestors. Gazing at the night sky still brings a sense of both awe and connectedness: awe because of the sheer, mind-boggling scope of the universe, and connectedness because of the nightly interaction between our planet and the wider cosmos.

This last point may explain, in particular, the enduring fascination with meteor showers in the modern age. Not only are they inherently spectacular the Perseid shower can produce a couple of shooting stars every minute at its peak – but they also remind us of the cyclical journey of our planet through the solar system.

Every year at around this time, the Earth's orbit crosses through a stream of comet debris, and for a few hours, this causes the night sky to light up with fireworks. This is one instance, I think, in which knowing the science behind what's going on up there actually helps to enhance our natural sense of wonder. It takes us beyond our Earthbound perspective in a way that would not have been possible a few centuries ago.

It's very easy to get caught up in the stresses and trivia of day-to-day life, but for me, one of the constant joys of the night sky is that it allows you to rise above all this,We have a great selection of blown glass backyard solar landscape lights and solar garden light. if only for a few hours.A solar bulb that charges up during the day and lights the night when the sun sets. That's why I'll be drinking lots of coffee and staying up past midnight for the Perseids. The forecast is for a clear night, so I'm quietly hopeful. When has the weather forecast ever been wrong?

That emotion was focused into her

Jessie J is fast becoming a household name, gaining radio play almost constantly for the last two years, and more recently as judge of BBC1's The Voice.

I considered I knew some of her music and was aware of her confident personality, so I anticipated a strong performance at Eden. I wasn't however prepared to be totally blown away.

On the hottest day of the year so far in Cornwall, six thousand people gathered throughout the day, filling the arena before Jessie was due to take the stage at 9pm.

Earlier that week Jessie had pulled out of two performances due to vocal problems – she was due to support Justin Timberlake at Dublin's Phoenix Park on the Wednesday, followed by a performance in Paris on the Thursday. The Eden Sessions relieved ticketholders just days before her gigs on Saturday and Sunday, with a statement on social media confirming that they would go ahead.

Eden's charm is its intimacy, any realism of being a few miles from the featureless town of St Austell is removed, you're transported into an unpolluted, unique musical experience, with the performers' stage flanked by illuminated biomes.

It felt an electric build up to welcome Jessie out, flashing spotlights teased the crowds, as the whistles and cheers persisted.

Jessie made a dramatic entrance and delighted the crowd by opening with her huge hit 'Price Tag'. It was funked up with drums and bass guitar lines not included on the original.

On stage the backdrop resembled a linked watch bracelet, in front of which stood tiered blocks covered in LCD screens, the footage adapting to each track and highlighting rhythms.

While paint splatters covered the screens, Jessie dedicated her second song 'Who's Laughing Now' to anyone who's been told they couldn't do something.

The artist delivered the shoulder brushes, hip gyros and finger flicks that have become almost trademarks, whilst skipping energetically across and between the levels of the stage.

Jessie teamed a fringed black minidress with heeled baseball boots. Sporting her new bold platinum crop, and unsurprisingly her signature huge gold hoops, her image matched the print on the promotional t-shirts worn by many a young girl in the crowd.

She held her hands high above her head making a heart icon to her fans, or 'heartbeats' as she calls them, which was copied and sent back by the crowd, and continued throughout the night.

Next came 'Rainbow'. Jessie instigated coordinated crowd waves during the choruses, and added all the trills, runs, licks and dit-dit-dit-dit-dits, ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-bas that we've come to expect. We carry a extensive line of Parking Lot Lighting inventory.

After a rousing performance of 'Stand Up', Jessie told of a childhood connection with Cornwall, having holidayed in Mullion for many years, and that returning felt special and emotional, as she fanned her face to hold back a tear.

That emotion was focused into her next song 'Nobody's Perfect'. Jessie gave a sensational performance, really brought a blend of power and emotion into the atmospheric mix on that heady night.

Next we were to be treated to the debut live performance of her new song. Excitedly Jessie revealed she had recorded it in Los Angeles that very day. "I am really excited about the person it's written for" said Jessie coyly before commencing 'Square One', a melodic pop track that also features an electronic rap line.

Jessie was visibly delighted to have treated us with a debut, but brought it back to reality by stating to the crowd "so many bugs keep flying into my mouth".

Jessie then asked the audience to introduce themselves to those on their left and right. Many smiles and high fives resulted. A young woman to my right had travelled from Kent for the gig and appeared to be mesmerised by Jessie's presence. More information about the program is available on the web site at www.streetlights-solar.com.

Make your own sushi night

Make your own sushi night where guests can wander around sampling tasty morsels and casually chatting. Perhaps try a curry night so everyone can pull up a chair and eat their dinner from a bowl on their lap. Cover your bed with a colourful top sheet and use it for extra seating. It's a great way to add a creative edge to regular get togethers with your friends.

If you have a balcony, open the doors and extend your living space. Use mirrors to create the illusion of space, both indoors and outdoors. Make sure your home is squeaky clean and free from clutter. Pack away any excess furniture or everyday items you won't be needing during the gathering, for example any exercise equipment or foldable tables. Move your furniture around to make more space to mingle.

Any surface can be used as an extra table such as a filing cabinet, TV unit or chest of drawers. Simply drape a table cloth over the top. Create a party like atmosphere with open spaces and small clusters of chairs for conversations. Use your bathroom for drinks storage by filling the bath or sink with ice and using it as a cooler. Clean as you go by putting bottles in a designated recycling box as the evening progresses.

Just make sure to keep your home as neat as possible because small apartments look even smaller when they're untidy.

Have spare bean bags and floor cushions handy for when you run out of chairs. If you're having a movie night, make sure there's plenty of cushions and blankets for your guests to snuggle in. Floor picnics are also a wonderful idea. Simply place a few picnic blankets right on top of your carpet and have a fabulous lounge room floor party. If you don't have carpet, pop a few yoga mats or a sleeping bag underneath the picnic rugs to make it a bit more comfortable.

There's lots of space between the top of your head and the ceiling of your apartment so make sure you use it. Buy electronic LED tea light candles (much safer than flame candles) and hang them in little glass holders from the ceiling. If your party has a theme, get some balloons to match. Hang bunting or fairy lights up high on a wall. Your floor space and surfaces are precious in a small home so reserve the hard to reach places for decorations.

The individual chips are closely arranged and all located under a conversion layer (chip-on-board), giving the impression of a homogeneous light-emitting surface and ensuring uniform colour and light appearance. For even better homogeneity, the chips are arranged in a circle under the conversion layer. This greatly simplifies the coupling of the LEDs into external, light-guiding optics. The light generated can be used with much lower optical loss, which in turn makes the LED lamps and luminaires more efficient. Typical LED benefits, such as energy efficiency, lamp life and minimal maintenance costs.

No surface-mount technology (SMT) soldering is necessary to mount the Soleriq S 13; glue, screws or a solder-less connector can do the job. Although the connecting wires can still be joined by simple manual soldering and then glued or screwed to the heat sink, the simpler option is to use a solder-less connector that takes care of both the electrical contact and the mechanical mounting. It eliminates the need for soldering; the connecting wires need only be inserted in the terminals provided. For more information, please visit www.streetlights-solar.com.

Conversations around the roundabout

I’d been thinking about construction of the final Caledon section of the connection between Highway 50 North of Bolton and Coleraine Drive forming a bypass of the village’s downtown. The Highway 50 connection will be a roundabout similar to one at the junction of Olde Baseline and Dixie Roads. I have no idea what has taken Ontario so long in adapting “roundabouts.” Anywhere we’ve encountered these ‘traffic circles,’ in Eastern Canada, the Caribbean or Europe, I’ve marveled at how efficiently they allow motorists to proceed in any one of several directions without the delay caused by traffic signals. Goodness knows Highway 50 has enough of those.

In any event, we were driving the highway connecting New Brunswick with the Confederation Bridge and Prince Edward Island. Halfway between the Trans-Canada Highway and the bridge, you’ll find a classic traffic circle with one leg leading into the small coastal town of Port Elgin. Quick as a wink, we made our way around the round-about and into town, stopping at a small, ramshackle grocery story hardly worthy of the name. There was nothing in the shelves we wanted until Lynda rounded the corner of an aisle and spotted two packages. Her eyes lit up like headlights. She scooped both packages in a flash. You see, back home, she’d run out of old-fashioned, “warm-light” 40 watt incandescent light bulbs. “You can’t get these in Bolton,” she said and, “I hate the light from those new bulbs.”

The roundabout at Port Elgin had taken us into the middle of a debate which will gain traction again this fall. One hundred and seventy-five watt incandescent bulbs have been banned from store shelves since the first of the year, the handiwork of John Baird when he was the Harper “we know better than you do” Government’s Environment Minister. Sixty and 40 watt bulbs will be banned as of Dec. 31 this year which explains why Lynda was loading up her supply.

There’s good reason for banning these energy inefficient bulbs over time. Half their energy is wasted as heat. In Germany, for example, using the new forms of light bulbs, CFL’s or LED’s, might save the equivalent of three nuclear power plants.

It’s the nanny state mentality in this country which drives critics to drink. Why would you ban good old fashioned, albeit inefficient light bulbs before you had a workable plan to dispose of the mercury used in CFL’s or before the genius of science completed its work of creating an super-efficient bulb offering the equivalent of an incandescent glow.

By definition, forcing Canadians to purchase much more expensive light bulbs containing a highly toxic chemical in the interests of appearing greener than green is nothing more than a hidden tax by another name.

That was the discussion returning to our campsite in New Brunswick by way of the Port Elgin round-about. It’s efficient as will be the traffic circle on Highway 50 where it joins Coleraine Drive within the next three years. The light bulb ban is another matter. By way of note, Lynda cleaned out the available stock at the Port Elgin grocery store. Another lady cleaned out the stock of a Home Hardware store in Chester, Nova Scotia to the tune of $500. Government Will Expand Roads Everywhere

President John Dramani Mahama yesterday announced that government would carry out major intervention in the road transport sector over the next four years to absorb the ever-growing volume of traffic across the country.

He noted that roads had become an issue of social tension in the country and there was therefore the need for an intervention in that sector to facilitate the movement of people, goods and services.

President Mahama announced this when he inspected the Awoshie-Pokuase and the Anyaa-Pokuase roads projects respectively, in the Ga West Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

The 15-kilometre (Km) Awoshie-Pokuase road and the 14-km Anyaa-Pokuase roads come with community infrastructure works, including a hospital for Ofankor, 14 schools to end the shift system in communities along the road project areas, accident centre at Amasaman, boreholes, new market and a lorry park for Anyaa.

The project on the Awoshie-Pokuase stretch of the road began in January last year and is being jointly funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Agence Francaisse Development (AFD).

The Anyaa-Pokuase dual carriageway started in November 2011 with a contract sum of GH 77.03 million and is being built by China Railway Wuju. Completion date is December 2014.

“It would include foot bridges, traffic light signals and street lighting systems,” President Mahama stated, adding that “life is not going to be the same for these communities,” because of the education, health and potable water supply components of the project.

As part of the project, the President indicated that an interchange would be constructed at the intersection of the Awoshie-Pokuase road and the Nsawam road to improve safety at the intersection.

President Mahama also directed the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning to pay compensation to land owners, who were yet to receive compensation, to enable the smooth execution of the projects.

President Mahama expressed government’s appreciation to the AfDB and the AFD for the project, which he described as a development corridor.

Alhaji Amidu Amin Sulemana, Minister for Roads and Highways told the President that the projects were on course and that the issue of compensation would be addressed in due course.

He said the French and the AfDB had agreed to support the construction of the inter-change project.

The Acting Director of Urban Roads, Alhaji Ahunu Abbass, who conducted the President round the project sites, stated that the community infrastructure works, such as the new market, water supply schemes, hospital and clinic would be completed by December next year.

In addition to the main road projects, he said, the AfDB was funding the construction of secondary roads and water distribution lines along the corridor.

“To improve safety along the road, provision has been made for eight footbridges at critical intersections along the road,” he added.
