My last committed attempt to observe the Perseid meteor shower, which star-gazers across the world are enjoying, was back in 2010. I was house-sitting in Spain at the time; my uncle in law used to live on the edge of a tiny village in the Spanish mountains. The village is several hundred metres above sea level, with hardly any street lighting and the most incredibly dark and clear skies – the kind you don't get in the UK outside of a national park.

I'd been there for about two weeks, and every day and night had been completely cloudless, with not even a hint of moisture in the air. Then, on the evening the Perseids were due to peak, everything changed. At dusk, a dense blanket of cloud started to roll across the mountains with a solemn inevitability. By 9pm, I might as well have been staring at a blank cinema screen. I think I manage to see one meteor before the last chink of starlight was extinguished.

The moral, of course, is that astronomy is a cruel and capricious mistress – something star-gazers have known for a very long time. Yet we keep going back. There's something very compelling about staring at the night sky. I'd say that it's innate to us. For most of human history, there can't have been a great deal to do at night. It's no great surprise that our ancestors spent a lot of time looking to the heavens, finding patterns and charting the movement of the planets.

They also weaved their stories into the night sky. As annual reports on the Perseids often fail to explain, the name of this meteor shower is derived from the constellation of Perseus, which is the point in the sky from which the meteors appear to come. Perseus, as you may know, was the slayer of the Gorgon Medusa and rescuer of Andromeda (whose constellation is home to our most famous galactic neighbour).Are you still hesitating about where to buy hid kits? Today, I think we can all agree that we're infinitely smarter than the ancient Greeks. Most 10 year-olds understand that stars are just large nuclear furnaces converting hydrogen into helium, and that the patterns of the constellations are nothing more than tricks of our Earthbound perspective.

Yet our sense of wonder remains curiously undiminished. There's still something almost primordial in the pleasure we can derive from the simple act of looking up at the universe. And arguably, although our understanding of what's going on up there has been transformed, one aspect of our pleasure is not dissimilar from that of our ancestors. Gazing at the night sky still brings a sense of both awe and connectedness: awe because of the sheer, mind-boggling scope of the universe, and connectedness because of the nightly interaction between our planet and the wider cosmos.

This last point may explain, in particular, the enduring fascination with meteor showers in the modern age. Not only are they inherently spectacular the Perseid shower can produce a couple of shooting stars every minute at its peak – but they also remind us of the cyclical journey of our planet through the solar system.

Every year at around this time, the Earth's orbit crosses through a stream of comet debris, and for a few hours, this causes the night sky to light up with fireworks. This is one instance, I think, in which knowing the science behind what's going on up there actually helps to enhance our natural sense of wonder. It takes us beyond our Earthbound perspective in a way that would not have been possible a few centuries ago.

Panasonic TX-L55WT65

The TX-L55WT65 is the crowning glory of Panasonic's current range of slim-line LED TVs, with more bells and whistles than a Brazilian carnival. You'll find not just dual Freeview and Freesat HD tuners, but also a camera, a clever new smart TV system and local dimming support.

Panasonic has created a whole new user interface for this year's TVs. It's essentially a homescreen that gathers stuff like the Smart TV apps, widgets and other goodies together in one place. Unlike other systems, Panasonic's allows you to create customised versions of the homescreen by adapting four of the provided templates. It's a clever idea that really works well from a user perspective as it saves you having to jump between different screens to access the apps you most commonly use.

The settings menus are still separate from this new system and don't look quite as classy, but they're speedy to use when you're jumping between the various picture and audio options. They give you plenty of control over the set's pictures too, as there's a full colour management system onboard. You now also get independent controls for contrast and backlight level, which wasn't supported on last year's WT50.

Another plus is the updated programming guide. It now has a video window to the top left-hand corner so you can check what's coming up later on in the day or evening without losing all audio and video from the show you're watching. The guide still looks rather dull and basic next to those on Sony and Samsung's sets, but it's very legible from a distance and makes it quick to jump between different programs on the timeline.

Last year's WT50 model was a handsome devil, and those genes have definitely been passed down to the WT65. It has a very different stand to the other TVs in Panasonic's 2013 lineup. The one used here is like a curved Perspex wedge with metal edging -- and looks better than that makes it sound. It helps to give the TV a light, floating-on-air look that's very appealing.

Reinforcing this airy feel is the fact the bezel around the screen is extremely narrow. Panasonic has also added a Perspex edge that drops down from the bottom of the screen. This is lit by an LED that makes the light runs across the bottom to create a cool sci-fi effect. The only downside is that the stand does tend to show up dust, so it might not be the best option if cleaning is, you know, not really your thing.

Like most high-end TVs these days the WT65 comes with two remotes: a standard zapper and a touchpad controller. The standard zapper is ace. It's chunky, without being uncomfortable to hold, and has a backlight so you can light up the buttons when you're watching a movie with the lights dimmed. The secondary remote has a circular touchpad and a trigger button on the bottom. It's a slight improvement on last year's similar touchpad controller, but still not as easy to use as Samsung's touchpad remote or LG motion controller.

Sadly Panasonic has cut the number of HDMI ports to three on this model, when most 55-inch TVs now come with four. It does have three USB ports though, and there are dual tuners for both Freeview HD and Freesat HD. If you plug a hard drive into one of these USB ports you can use the set as a full-blown PVR because the dual tuners allow you to watch one channel while recording another.

There's also a mini jack input that lets you to connect Scart devices up to the TV via a small breakout cable, and naturally there's a set of component inputs too. There's an Ethernet connector on the rear for piping in the Internets and Wi-Fi built-in too.

This year Panasonic has introduced an all-new Smart TV system which is head and shoulder above what was available on the company's older models. It uses a new homescreen that pops up when you start the TV or press the Home button on the remote. There are four different prebuilt homescreens you can choose from, but the clever bit is that you can also create your own using the templates provided. This is very quick and easy to do too. Whittier youths learn the responsibility

Dozens of students learned the importance of preserving the environment as they embarked on a year-long journey with the Homework Assistance Program at the Community Resource Center in Whittier.

With its "Recycle, Reduce, Reuse, and Reinvent" theme, the after-school program challenged young imaginations to collect materials such as plastic bottles and bags, soda cans, and old clothing and turn them into reusable items while striving to reduce waste, energy and pollution.

On Thursday, the program hosted an Art of Recycling Fashion Show where students displayed self-made items, such as toy animals, robots and masks and modeled clothing they and their families created out of recyclable items. Senior citizens from Amelia Mayberry Park contributed to the showcase with recyclable art pieces ranging from crochet kitchen products and bags.

"This family activity was a great way to be able to have parents participate in this program and have their kids educate them," Community Resource Center Facility Director JoAnn Eros-Delgado said.

About 50 people cheered and admired the students as they strutted their reuseable items on stage.

"You could see the pride of the parents as the kids walked down the runway," Eros-Delgado said.

Isabel Araiza, 11, was inspired by learning how to recycle items as she donned a grocery bag shirt and a shopping bag skirt with plastic forks and spoons dangling from the bottom of it.

Angenny Pinedo, 10, wore a bracelet and earrings made out of parts of a soda can and carried a purse made out of Capri Sun packaging. "I was happy to use things that people throw away," she said. In the future, she plans to make a dress out of paper bags.

The center has been conducting its after-school program for more than 10 years and normally has different themes, but Egos-Delgado feels as if this year's theme was one of the most successful.

"Students collected recyclable items throughout the year and turned them in for money and as a group they were able to decide how to spend the money," she said. They opted for an ice cream party on Friday.

"The kids learned part of responsibility is learning that from trash, can come treasures," she said.

While the community can learn from these creative young minds, Southern California Edison has a few tips to conserve energy this summer.

Prevent blackouts by using less energy and water; turn off unnecessary lights, avoid using major appliances, and set air conditioning thermostats up to 78 degrees or higher, according to Edison's website.
